They did take militaristic action, they were in trouble for attempting bombings in violent struggle against oppression. The Weather Underground was a subsidy group founded in 1969 of the Students for a Democratic Society, with an emphasis on guerrilla warfare in pursuit of revolution. They felt that Black Panther Party wasn’t doing enough for self defense and they had lost their vision. In this letter, they named the Weather Underground as the vanguard of the left in criticism of the central Black Panther Party. While the NY 21 were in jail, they decided to publish an open letter to the Weather Underground while awaiting trial. This trial was extremely important to the party as a whole because it galvanized lots of media attention, and the fact that they got off not guilty gave hope to Panthers and everyone for black liberation that there was a change coming. After this trial of about two years every member is acquitted and found not guilty. They were blamed for several planned out bombings across the city, especially in department stores, and 21 Black Panther members of were arrested and charged with 156 counts in relation to these bombings. It began when the NYPD, FBI, COINTELPRO, and LEG, a New York law enforcement group, decided to campaign for Panther repression. It was the longest court case that New York has ever had. The Panther 21 is one of the most well known court cases in history, and especially in New York history. They took action on Washington DC.ĭrug Control: An organization called “People for the People” offered drug control and education in the heavily drug infested community of Corona Elmhurst, in Queens, New York. Children were being bit, it was a really unhealthy situation, and the government did nothing about it. These included immunizations, blood tests, x rays, etc. Health Clinics: There were free health services in Harlem, Lincoln hospital, and Brooklyn in Sutter avenue to combat the lack of health care from the government. Another accomplishment in 19 69, Langston Hughes library and cultural center for Black Heritage opened up in Queens.īreakfast Programs: There were two main breakfast programs held in churches and schools, modeled just like the Oakland chapters, and they were located in Brownsville in Harlem. As one form of self defense being in New York, unlike many other Black Panther parties, they did not really have liberty to do police patrols the same way because of the gun restrictions in New York.Įducation and Liberation Schools: Aside from their own liberation school and studies and within breakfast programs, they were very successful in securing a black principal in a Harlem school. The Harlem Committee of Self Defense: The Black Panther Party worked with this committee to express grievances with the NYPD and other government officials if they would listen, which they wouldn’t. The New York Black Panther Party wanted to put an emphasis on liberation through survival programs and wellness programs. So all of these communities were where the lumpen proletariat were. Contrary to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the New York Black Panther program only put locations in poor black communities. The New York Black Panther Party was special because they were very focused on creating centers that were community oriented, ideologically and physically. The main chapters are Harlem, Bed Stuy, Corona, Queens, and Brownsville.
